香港著名导演及监制。曾经在七十年代导演了一系列武打功夫片，例如《荡寇滩》、《饿虎狂龙》、《南拳北腿》、《香港小教父》、《李小龙传奇》、《死亡塔》等，影片风靡了香港、东南亚，也造就了当时一批武打明星，例如陈星、梁小龙、黄元申、刘忠良及日籍演员仓田保昭、韩籍演员黄正利等。

　　一九七三年成立思远影业公司，除动作片外，又导演了新闻写实影片，开创了香港警匪写实片之先河，代表作有轰动一时的《廉政风暴》、《七百万元大劫案》，以及稍后的法庭影片由刘德华主演的《法外情》。

　　吴思远不断开创电影新潮流，将喜剧元素加入功夫片中，制作了由当时寂寂无名的成龙主演的《蛇形刁手》及《醉拳》，尤其是《醉拳》震惊中外影坛，电影圈掀起一片效仿之风，令功夫喜剧片潮流经历近二十年不衰，不朽名作《醉拳》更令成龙一夜成名红遍世界迄今。

　　之后又大胆起用新导演徐克拍摄《蝴蝶》令人耳目一新，徐克随后导演或监制的影片，例如《笑傲江湖》、《倩女幽魂》、《东方不败》等，均对香港电影的发展潮流造成极深远的影响，现今徐克已是蜚声国际的大导演。

　　在拍摄港产片同时，亦在美国及其他地区投资制作了七部美国动作片，尤其是由元奎导演的《No Retreat, No Surrender》更捧红了Jean-Claude Van Damme,使他成为荷里活著名动作明星。

　　一部超级喜剧片《赌圣》将周星驰捧成天皇巨星，该影片在当时打破了香港票房纪录。

　　吴思远又是首位进入大陆拍摄影片，进军大陆市场的香港电影人，是大陆、香港、台湾三地导演研讨会的发起人，与中国大陆各电影制片厂、中国电影发行公司及中外影片合拍公司、电影局、广播电视电影部都有较好关系，及了解大陆电影市场的运作。在大陆合拍的影片有由林青霞、张曼玉、梁家辉主演的《新龙门客栈》，由张曼玉、王祖贤主演的《青蛇》，由李连杰主演的《黄飞鸿之狮王争霸》，梁家辉主演的《人约黄昏》及由张曼玉、邬君梅、杨紫琼主演的《宋家皇朝》，以上所有影片在大陆均创下极高票房纪录。
